Linearize PDF
Optimise PDFs for fast web viewing with progressive loading.
Overview
The Linearize PDF tool restructures a PDF file for "Fast Web View". A linearized PDF is organised so that the first page can be displayed immediately while the rest of the document continues to download in the background. This significantly improves the user experience when viewing PDFs embedded in web pages or served from a web server.
Example: a 100-page PDF hosted on a website normally forces every visitor to wait for the entire file to download before the first page appears — often 10–30 seconds on a typical connection. Linearize the same file and page 1 renders almost immediately (usually under a second), while the remaining pages stream in quietly as the reader scrolls. The content is unchanged; only the byte order inside the file is reorganised.
How to Use
- Navigate to Linearize PDF from the Security & Optimization menu.
- Upload your file using drag-and-drop, Browse Files, or cloud storage (Dropbox / Google Drive).
- Click Linearize to process.
- Download the result when processing completes.
Options
The linearization process is fully automatic. The tool reorganises the internal structure of the PDF for byte-serving without changing any visible content.
Tips & Notes
Linearize PDFs before uploading them to your website or content management system. Combined with Compress PDF, you can deliver the best possible web viewing experience.
Linearization may slightly increase the file size due to the addition of a linearization dictionary and hint tables. The increase is typically negligible.
